Filipino-Canadians Take Pride in Their Heritage on Philippine Independence Day
On Sunday, June 12, The MFFC (Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians) held a flag-raising ceremony and celebration at the Markham Civic Centre to commemorate the 113th Anniversary of the Philippine Independence.
Numerous guests and V.I.P.s participated in the event, including representatives from the Municipal, Provincial and Federal governments. Some of the dignitaries include Hon. Michael Chan., Mayor Frank Scarpitti, Councillor Alex Chiu, and other members of the Markham and York Region councils and York Region Catholic and Public School Board Trustees.
“It is always a distinct pleasure and honour for me to join the Markham Federation of Filipino Canadian’s annual celebration to commemorate Philippine Independence Day and reaffirm the fundamental human rights of freedom and equality. Markham’s Filipino community is so warm, welcoming and supportive - an integral part of the cultural diversity that makes Ontario such a dynamic, strong, and vibrant place to live and work”, says Michael Chan, M.P.P., Markham-Unionville and Minister of Tourism and Culture.

Following the flag-raising ceremony, people continued the celebration at the MFFC Community Centre located on 1151 Denison Street in Markham. The event included delicious Filipino cuisine, impressive entertainment by local MFFC talents and lots of fun activities for everyone.
“We just wanted to thank you for inviting us to your celebrations today. It was a wonderful event! We both learned something about your culture, the people, and of course your food. We couldn't get over how polite everyone was. …And you are all so talented. Couldn't get over how good the young people’s singing group was. So professional!”, says event attendees, Simone & Bob Tekauc.
