Shown in the picture above are the participants in the presentation on Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B and HIV in High-Risk Immigrant Ethnic Communities with focus on the Filipino Community. This event was only one of the workshops which was held at the Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians headquarters in Markham Ontario. This project of the Canadian Ethnocultural Council is in partnership with the Canadian Liver Foundation of Canada and funded by the Public Health Department of Canada. Presentation was facilitated by Lydia Bustamante, RN and member of MFFC. Sucy Eapen, coordinator and backbone of the CEC project provided ample support and assistance. The president of CEC, Lou Sekulovski was a special guest.
The project aims to empower immigrant communities especially those considered in high-risk with the aforementioned diseases to be able to take care of themselves through provision of accurate, current baseline information and knowledge on how these diseases can be prevented and treated. A Training Manual for Health Care Providers was provided to the participants which will help in providing support and information for future workshops and communication with Filipino groups.
The workshop presentation was attended by representatives from the MFFC (President and members), Catholic Community Services of York Region(Settlement and Education Department), Kababayan Multicultural Centre, Editor and Publisher of Balita (an ethnic newspaper) President of St Luke’s Alumni Nursing Association of Canada, Members of Bukas Loob sa Diyos (Filipino Catholic Charismatic Group), RN from a Long-Term Care and Retirement Facility and a member of the Scarborough Ontario Seniors’ Association.
