November 5, 2009 - Markham,

The Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians (MFFC) presents “A Taste of Broadway – the Classics”, a musical concert for a cause. This event is organized along with the Alex Chiu charities to help raise funds to aid the thousands of victims affected by the disasters caused by recent typhoons in the Philippines.

The show will feature selections from your favourite Broadway musicals, including Cats, West Side Story, Oliver, Fiddler on the Roof, Annie, and the Sound of Music. This event will showcase an array of Filipino-Canadian artists, including the MFFC Youth Performing Arts Group and a special performance by Ma-Anne Dionisio (known for her starring role in Miss Saigon). On October 10, 2009, the MFFC held a similar event at the Richmond Hill Centre of Performing Arts. The event sold-out over 600 tickets in one evening and received raving reviews from the public. “Where do I buy the ticket for tomorrow’s show? I want to see it again because it was a great show!” says Jack Heath, Deputy Mayor of Markham, after seeing the show.

All proceeds from the performance will go to aid the typhoon victims of the Philippines. During the months of September and October, the Philippines was hit by a series of typhoons considered to be the worst in decades. Typhoon Ketsana alone has left a death toll of close to 400 people dead and thousands injured.

The MFFC is appealing to various levels of government for support to help their fellow Filipinos affected by the disaster in the Philippines. “Even though we are far from the Philippines, a part of the country is still with us and it affects us here in Canada. So we try to do our best to help out in any way we can”, says Yolanda Ladines, President of the MFFC. The Town of Markham has already approved a grant of $7,500 to support the relief efforts.

“A Taste of Broadway – the Classics” will be held on December 9, 2009, 7:00 p.m. at the Markham Theater for Performing Arts. Ticket prices are $35 & $45.  To purchase tickets for this event, please contact Ramon Ombao at 416-358-3669, or Ester Toribio at 905-294-9350, or at the Box Office at 905-305-SHOW (7469).

The MFFC has set-up separate funds to support this relief effort. If you are unable to attend this event but wish to make a donation for this cause, please contact the Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians at 905 305-1320.
