OUR COMMUNITY HISTORY

Over Three Decades of Community, Culture, and Care

 Building a Community of Belonging

Founded in 1989, the Markham Federation of Filipino Canadians (MFFC) began with a vision to celebrate Filipino heritage while creating a welcoming place where people could connect, support one another, and contribute to the diverse community of Markham.

Guided by dedicated volunteers, a committed Board of Directors, and early honorary leaders including the late Mayor Donald Cousins and the late Councillor Alex Chiu, MFFC grew from a community initiative into a vibrant organization built on friendship, service, and cultural pride.

For more than three decades, MFFC has been a place where generations come together — preserving traditions, empowering families, supporting seniors, and creating opportunities for everyone to thrive.

Over the years, MFFC acquired 3 units in a building located in Markham. The Centre is a place for gathering by members to hold programs, social and civic events, and available for use by others for a nominal fee.

A Commitment to Advocacy and Inclusion

Throughout our history, MFFC has proudly stood for equity, respect, and social responsibility. We have advocated for fairness, supported initiatives addressing racism and discrimination, and worked alongside diverse communities to promote understanding and inclusion.

Our educational programs have addressed important issues affecting individuals and families, including youth development, mental health, domestic abuse, violence prevention, and community well-being. Through awareness and dialogue, we continue to help build a stronger and more compassionate society.

Inspiring Future Generations

Our youth programs encourage young people to embrace their Filipino identity while developing confidence, leadership skills, and a deeper appreciation of their heritage. Through cultural education, heritage experiences, and opportunities to share their talents, youth are inspired to become future leaders.

Programs such as our “A Taste of Broadway” musical productions celebrate creativity and community spirit, while our high school graduate bursary program recognizes and supports academic achievement.

Celebrating Filipino Heritage

Preserving and sharing Filipino culture remains at the heart of MFFC’s mission. Each year, we bring together community members, organizations, and leaders to celebrate our history, traditions, and contributions to Canada.

Our Philippine Independence Day Flag Raising Ceremony at the City of Markham celebrates the enduring friendship between Canada and the Philippines. We also honour the life and legacy of the Philippines’ national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, through commemorative events and wreath-laying ceremonies at the Dr. Jose Rizal Monument in Markham.

These celebrations strengthen cultural pride while encouraging multicultural understanding and civic engagement.

Supporting Seniors Through Connection and Care

Our seniors are an important part of the MFFC family. Through our Seniors Program, older adults enjoy friendship, lifelong learning, wellness activities, and opportunities to remain active and engaged.

Supported by the New Horizons for Seniors Program and the Ontario Seniors Community Grant, our seniors participate in dancing, language classes, educational workshops, social activities, and travel opportunities.

Our beloved “Seniors in Symphony” choir and Seniors Dance Group share their talents with the wider community through performances at nursing homes and seniors’ residences, bringing music, joy, and companionship to others.

We are also committed to helping seniors stay safe and informed. Through partnerships with law enforcement representatives, we provide educational sessions on common scams affecting older adults and share practical strategies to help protect their personal information, financial security, and overall well-being.

Promoting Lifelong Learning and Wellness

MFFC supports individuals and families through programs that encourage health, education, and personal growth. Our activities include medical fairs, mental health seminars, career planning sessions, financial literacy workshops, estate planning presentations, and technology classes that help community members confidently navigate today’s world

Serving Locally and Globally

The spirit of compassion that defines MFFC extends beyond Markham. Over the years, our community has responded generously to disasters around the world, supporting relief efforts following earthquakes, typhoons, tsunamis, and other emergencies in the Philippines, Haiti, Japan, and beyond.

Closer to home, MFFC has supported important community initiatives, including fundraising efforts toward the construction of Markhaven Home for Seniors.

Our cultural contributions to Markham continue through the Dr. Jose Rizal Monument, donated by MFFC in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary. Unveiled in 2019, the monument stands as a lasting symbol of Filipino Canadian contributions to the city’s multicultural landscape.

Our dedication to community service was internationally recognized in 2006 when the President of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, presented MFFC with the prestigious Presidential BANAAG Award at Malacañang Palace.

Looking Ahead Together

With the continued dedication of our volunteers, Board of Directors, community partners, supporters and championed by the current Mayor of Markham, Frank Scarpitti, MFFC looks toward the future with gratitude and optimism.

We thank our founders, volunteers, government partners, the City of Markham, community organizations, and everyone who has been part of our journey.

Together, we have built more than an organization — we have built a welcoming community where culture is celebrated, generations are connected, and compassion inspires action.

Our story continues, and our future is stronger because we build it together.
