In today’s rapidly evolving digital world, fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated, putting seniors at greater risk of scams, identity theft, and financial loss. Staying informed and aware is one of the most powerful ways to stay protected. On July 9, 2026, MFFC seniors took an important step toward safeguarding themselves and their loved ones by attending an engaging and eye-opening Fraud Awareness and Prevention seminar presented by York Regional Police Officers Sean and Mo.

The officers shared valuable insights into the alarming rise of scams in the post-pandemic era, fueled by advances in digital technology and artificial intelligence. They discussed common fraud schemes, including scammers impersonating Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) representatives, the “Grandparent Scam,” and Romance Scams that prey on the trust and vulnerability of isolated or lonely seniors.

Attendees also learned how phishing and smishing attacks can lead to identity theft and financial loss, along with practical tips on recognizing fraudulent messages, protecting personal information, and staying safe online.

Knowledge is one of our best defenses against fraud, and this informative session empowered our seniors with the awareness and confidence to protect themselves and their loved ones.
